Earthquake Risk

Earthquakes are among the most destructive natural hazards, capable of causing massive loss of life, widespread infrastructure collapse, and long-term socio-economic disruption. Unlike many other disasters, earthquakes strike suddenly and without warning, leaving communities highly vulnerable when preparedness is insufficient.

Globally, earthquakes affect millions of people each year. Between 2000 and 2023, major earthquakes caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and generated economic losses in the hundreds of billions of USD. High-risk regions include tectonic plate boundaries, densely populated cities, and areas with poorly enforced building standards, where vulnerability is greatly amplified.

Beyond the initial shaking, earthquakes often trigger secondary hazards such as landslides, tsunamis, liquefaction, and infrastructure failures that magnify their impact. Rapid urbanization in seismic zones and aging infrastructure further increase exposure.

Reducing earthquake risk requires robust monitoring, hazard mapping, and preparedness planning. Using satellite remote sensing (SAR interferometry, optical change detection), seismic modeling, and ground deformation analysis, we assess seismic hazards, map damage, and support recovery efforts. These technologies provide critical insights for early response, resilient infrastructure planning, and long-term risk reduction in earthquake-prone regions.
