Wildfire Risk

Wildfires are one of the fastest-spreading natural hazards, capable of devastating ecosystems, destroying infrastructure, and threatening human lives within hours. Fueled by extreme heat, prolonged droughts, high winds, and human activity, their frequency and intensity have risen sharply in recent decades.

Globally, wildfires affect millions of hectares of land each year, causing economic losses in the tens of billions of USD and releasing massive amounts of carbon emissions. Between 2000 and 2023, wildfire disasters displaced millions of people and contributed to biodiversity loss, air pollution, and long-term land degradation.

The growing risk is closely linked to climate change, land-use change, and urban expansion into forested areas, which increase both the likelihood of ignition and the scale of destruction. Regions such as the Mediterranean, North America, South America, Africa, and Australia have experienced some of the most severe wildfire seasons on record.

Effective wildfire management requires early detection, continuous monitoring, and rapid response strategies. Using satellite remote sensing (optical, thermal, and radar data), fire behavior modeling, and time-series analysis, we provide near real-time wildfire detection, burned area mapping, and risk forecasting. These insights support emergency services, environmental agencies, and policymakers in reducing losses, protecting communities, and fostering ecosystem resilience.
