Avalanche Risk

Avalanches are sudden, fast-moving masses of snow, ice, and debris that can destroy everything in their path within seconds. They represent one of the most dangerous natural hazards in mountainous and alpine regions, threatening communities, infrastructure, transportation routes, and tourism activities. Each year, avalanches cause hundreds of fatalities worldwide and generate significant economic losses, particularly in areas dependent on winter tourism and mountain transport networks. Between 2000 and 2023, thousands of avalanche incidents were recorded, with climate change contributing to unpredictable snowpack stability and increasing hazard levels in traditionally safe zones. Avalanche risk is influenced by a combination of factors, including heavy snowfall, rapid temperature fluctuations, wind loading, slope angle, deforestation, and human activities such as skiing and construction in high-risk areas. The growing popularity of winter recreation and expanding settlements in mountain regions further amplify vulnerability. Effective risk reduction requires continuous snowpack monitoring, terrain analysis, and reliable early warning systems. Through satellite remote sensing (optical, radar, and thermal data), digital elevation modeling, and time-series analysis, we detect snow distribution, assess slope stability, and map avalanche-prone areas. These technologies support emergency services, local authorities, and tourism operators in improving preparedness, reducing casualties, and safeguarding mountain communities.
